Transport damage to motorcycles is almost always preventable. Not by luck — by preparation. A bike that arrives at its destination with a broken mirror, scratched fairing, or bent brake lever got that way because someone skipped one of the steps that takes five minutes to do correctly. This checklist is the prep work that separates a clean transport from a claim against your carrier — or a repair bill you didn’t plan for.

Run through it before every transport, whether you’re loading the bike yourself or handing it to a professional service. The checklist applies regardless of distance — the first five miles of highway vibration can do the same damage as five hundred if the load isn’t right.

Documentation — Before You Load Anything

Take photos before the bike goes on the trailer or into the carrier’s hands. All four sides, close-ups of any existing cosmetic damage, and the current mileage reading. This takes three minutes and is the only way to establish a pre-transport condition record if a dispute arises with a shipping carrier. Don’t skip this step — it has no downside and significant upside if something goes wrong.

• Close-up of any existing scratches, dents, or damage
• Photo of the odometer showing current mileage
• Photo of the bike loaded and strapped, before departure
• Screenshot or print of VIN for records

Fuel, Fluids, and Bike Prep

For any transport longer than a few miles, fuel level matters. Keep the tank below half — ideally at one-quarter or less. A full tank adds weight unnecessarily and, on an improperly vented trailer or in a covered transport container, can present a vapor issue. Fuel-injected bikes that pressurize the tank don’t have this concern to the same degree, but reducing weight and reducing risk is the right approach regardless.

Turn the fuel petcock to OFF if your bike is carbureted. A carburetor float needle that’s slightly worn will drip if the petcock is left open during an extended stationary period — and fuel dripping inside an enclosed trailer is a real problem. Confirm the bike is in first gear or park to prevent rolling. If the bike will be horizontal or stored at an unusual angle during transport, check with a professional about the appropriate handling procedures for your specific model.

Securing for Transport — Final Checklist

Once the bike is loaded, work through this securing checklist before moving the vehicle:

• Front suspension compressed approximately one-third of travel under strap tension
• Four straps minimum — two forward to handlebar/triple tree, two rear to frame loop points
• No straps attached to brake levers, turn signals, exhaust, or fairings
• Wheel chock or paddock stand preventing lateral movement
• All loose items removed from the bike — bags, mirrors that extend wide, anything that can catch air
• Strap tension checked after first 10–15 miles of travel
